NILD Educational Therapy – What is it?

NILD = National Institute for Learning Development (visit www.nild.org for more information). Since NILD began in 1973, it has focused on getting to the root of various learning disabilities. NILD Educational Therapy focuses on building new and efficient learning processes to help students learn how to think and solve problems independently, developing 4 key components of learning:

      • Cognition [effective thinking strategies]
      • Perception [process visual and auditory information correctly]
      • Academics [improve in content areas hindered by underlying root causes
      • Emotions [growth in confidence and competence in all areas
TIME Commitment of Educational Therapy

JI focuses on transformational Ed. Therapy and not quick fix subject matter “tutoring”. We do not just accommodate symptoms, we intentionally mediate based on the student’s formal testing.

NILD recommends twice per week 80 minute therapy sessions over three years for best results. Joshua Institute offers 2×60 min. sessions as well as the recommended 2×80 min. sessions to provide time and financial flexibility for our families.

While NILD recommends a three year intervention plan for long-term, lasting results, Joshua Institute creates our Ed. Services contracts on an academic year-to-year basis.

Why Joshua Institute Ed. Services?

Joshua Institute exists to develop the whole person through the renewing of their minds.

>   Our specialized educational services discover and unlock the fullest potential of our students.

>   Our therapists partner with the student and parents to develop and achieve individualized goals.

>   Joshua Institute’s Educational Therapists (“Coaches”) are NILD certified.

>   Your student will be assigned a Coach who will work with them one-on-one for the entire year.

>   Each student receives an individualized Student Success Plan (SSP), which JI uses to facilitate collaboration between the student and their Coach. The SSP sets targeted goals and reflects NILD methodology (techniques) to strengthen cognition.

What does Educational Therapy look like at JI?

        Sessions Location and Times:

  • On-site at Joshua Institute sessions are preferred as they are the most effective. However, occasionally we are able to coordinate virtual remote sessions.
  • Ed. Therapy sessions are typically scheduled twice a week, either Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday for 60 or 80 minutes per session.
  • TEACH Therapy, geared for young students who are not yet reading, meets twice a week for 40 minutes each session.

          Ed. Services Contract and Billing

Ed. Services contracts are based on the number of weeks of service and the weekly rate for the desired length of sessions. Tuition is then averaged into equal monthly invoices. There are typically 35 billable weeks of service during an academic year. Invoices are emailed to families September – Mar (9 months) and payment is expected by the 10th of each month, via cash or check.

          A “Typical Session”

Individualized Student Success Plan. Each session is designed around meeting the goals of your student’s individualized SSP by developing their critical thinking skills while meeting their ZPD through proven therapeutic techniques.

Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). Sessions are held with intentionality to meet the student’s ZPD – the gap between actual development (independent) and potential development (guided). The ZPD is used to challenge cognitive abilities without creating frustration or the student shutting down.

NILD Methodology. Your student’s Coach will utilize NILD’s 5 core techniques to maximize each session’s potential in helping your student achieve their learning goals. Coaches aim to use all 5 NILD core techniques in every session.

1. Rhythmic Writing

2. Gray Matter Literacy (Anchor Words)

3. Buzzer Words

4. Dictation and Copy

5. Math Block

Our highly trained Educational Coaches learn these specialized and targeted techniques during their rigorous Master’s level NILD certification.

Annual Year-End Reassessment Testing

Every May each student is reassessed to monitor and evaluate progress, set goals, and then create next year’s individualized SSP. Cognitive abilities are reassessed every 3 years.
